OWATONNA FORWARD: You can help to shape the future

The best way to predict the future is to invent it. That was — and still is — the aim of Owatonna Forward. There are so many reasons that people are drawn to Owatonna: great schools, beautiful parks, proximity to the metro area (not too close and not too far), good jobs, and wonderful people. These reasons, and many more, keep people here for a lifetime. And in that lifetime, times have changed and times always will. Without change, dreams and communities wither and die. So, that’s why a grassroots group launched Owatonna Forward in 2016. Our group dreamed [...]

Choose to invest in the Owatonna community

Alice: “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” The Cheshire Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.” Alice: “I don’t much care where.” The Cheshire Cat: “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.” — Alice in Wonderland You don’t need to travel far from the city of Owatonna to encounter communities that are slowly fading away. You’ve all seen them: Towns with main streets full of empty buildings and empty streets. Places with no grocery stores or restaurants; communities where schools have consolidated and with that [...]

Is Owatonna a perfect world?

It was a warm sunny afternoon as I opened a brown paper sack and began to empty the contents. Here I was, in a Chipotle restaurant, ready to devour my burrito bowl when I noticed something on my to-go bag. It was a quote, in a darker hue of brown than the bag itself, which read, “We will never have a perfect world, but it’s not romantic or naïve to work toward a better one.” How strange to be motivated by a fast-food bag. I contemplated the quote for the duration of my lunch, and then, decided I could [...]

Grassroots groups ready to take next steps to move Owatonna forward

OWATONNA — Owatonna Forward is ready to move into its next phase. After sharing its vision to make Owatonna “the hub of southern Minnesota” that will “attract the world to its doors,” and after delineating 13 action-specific goals for the community — “destiny drivers,” they are called — the grassroots, citizen-driven effort is ready to start efforts to fulfill those goals. Part of those efforts will involve a new cast of characters, designated as “champions” for the goals, the destiny drivers. Over the next three months, the champions will work with the members of Owatonna Forward, called “stewards,” to [...]

OWATONNA FORWARD: Final Destiny Drivers Seek To Embrace Community’s Diversity

OWATONNA — When Owatonna Forward began the public phase of its mission earlier this year, one vital step, members of the group said, was to listen — truly listen — to what the people of the community said about the future of Owatonna and what the community would look like, would be like. That desire to listen hasn’t diminished, for at the heart of community is communication, they say. Launched in January 2016, Owatonna Forward is a grassroots, citizen-driven effort that, according to its website, “seeks to ensure a healthy and prosperous future for the Owatonna community.” But the [...]

Education in Owatonna is among top drivers of communities future, organization says

As part of an ongoing occasional series, presented in the Tuesday and Weekend editions of the Owatonna People’s Press — a series which began on Dec. 5 and will continue through Dec. 19 — those destiny drivers are being revealed to the community. It’s not surprising that the education component came up in those listening sessions and the survey results, not only because of the inevitable connection between education and a community’s destiny, but even because of the name “Owatonna Forward” and what connections that may have with some in the community. The name “Owatonna Forward” was first used [...]
